What "sober curious" actually means
It's simple: questioning your relationship with alcohol without necessarily quitting forever or joining a program. Maybe you do Dry January. Maybe you just noticed you have more fun — and better mornings — without drinking. There's no test to pass and no label required.
Practical first steps:
- Order like you mean it. "I'll have the No-groni" lands better than "just a soda." The restaurants on our list take the order seriously.
- Find one recurring thing. A meetup, a hiking group, a coffee shop where they know your order. Routine beats willpower.
- Keep something in the fridge. NA beer has gotten genuinely good — having it on hand removes the friction.
Find your people
- Washington Sober Meetup — 1,400+ members, regular alcohol-free outings across the DMV.
- DC Sober Curious — smaller monthly gatherings.
- Sober Supper Club DC — curated alcohol-free dinners, a social group not a program.
California sober in NoVA
What this section is: straight talk for people who skipped alcohol but not cannabis. What it isn't: legal advice, medical advice, or a recommendation. Know your own situation.
"California sober" means no alcohol — but cannabis is still on the table. It's one of the fastest-growing ways people actually live alcohol-free, and most sober guides pretend it doesn't exist. We won't.
The basics in Virginia
- Adults 21+ in Virginia can legally possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana and grow up to 4 plants per household. Retail sales are a shifting landscape — Virginia still has no legal recreational retail market, so check current law before assuming anything about buying.
- DC has its own rules (legal to possess and gift, not to buy at a store). The two jurisdictions differ, so know which side of the river you're on.
- Don't drive under the influence of anything. Clear-headed means clear-headed.
Where the scenes overlap
- THC drinks at NA bars: Binge Bar in DC serves THC drinks alongside its mocktails — the zero-proof and cannabis scenes already share a room.
- Socially: plenty of sober meetups are 420-friendly in practice even when it's not on the flyer. Read the room, not the rules.
If California sober is your lane, everything else on this site still applies — the bars, the restaurants, the events, the coffee. The only difference is what's in your cup at home.
If you need more than a guide
This site is a lifestyle guide, not a recovery program. If alcohol is a problem rather than a preference, there's real help:

- AA meetings meet all over NoVA — search "AA Northern Virginia" for schedules near you.
